What is ABA ?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a scientific approach to understanding and changing behavior. It focuses on applying principles of learning theory to increase desired behaviors and decrease undesired behaviors.
•	ABA is rooted in the principles of behaviorism, emphasizing observable behaviors and the environmental factors that influence them.
•	It uses techniques like positive reinforcement, shaping, and prompting to teach new skills and modify existing behaviors.
•	ABA is widely recognized and used, especially with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but can be an effective treatment for anyone in need of behavior change.
Here's how ABA differs from other therapies:
•	ABA is highly structured and behavior-focused, whereas psychotherapy and play therapy are more focused on emotional and cognitive processes.
•	While ABA concentrates on changing observable actions, other therapy forms work to create changes within a person's inner thoughts and feelings.

The treatment process

Obtaining services from start to finish

Prior to requesting an intake for your child , families must secure a formal diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) from a qualified medical professional, such as a Medical Doctor (MD) or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in psychology. The Waypoint team will then submit an insurance authorization. Once the services are approved, the following steps will occur:

Personal Assessment: A comprehensive assessment is scheduled with a BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst) .

Individualized Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment, a Behavior Analyst (BCBA) develops an individualized treatment plan and it will be submitted to your insurance company for approval.

Team Assignment: A BCBA and BT (Behavioral Therapist) will be assigned to work with your loved one according to the family’s availability.

Session Begins: A Behavior Therapist will implement services in your home or community. A BCBA will supervise the Behavior Therapist.

Progress measurement: The BT will enter the data from each session into our cutting-edge Electronic Health Record which allows the BCBA to monitor your child’s progress in real time.

Parent training: The BCBA will work with the parent in the home on the family’s goals from the assessment.

Coordination of Care: The BCBA collaborates with other professionals involved in the child's care (e.g., therapists, doctors, teachers).

Personalized ABA Assessments

We'll begin with a thorough assessment conducted by our Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This will help us understand your child's current skills and needs. We'll gather information through several methods, including spending time observing your child, having conversations with you as parents/caregivers, and using standardized assessments. We'll carefully select these assessments based on your child's current abilities and developmental stage, ensuring we get a complete and accurate picture.

Individualized Treatment Plans

Following our initial assessment, our Behavior Analyst (BCBA) will create a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for your child. This plan will focus on developing important social skills, enhancing their ability to learn and communicate, and fostering greater independence.

We'll also address any behaviors that might be impacting your child's quality of life by developing a supportive and tailored behavior intervention plan.

We'll then submit this comprehensive plan to your insurance company for approval. This process will determine the number of ABA therapy hours that best fit your child's and family's unique needs, ensuring we provide the most effective and supportive care.

Therapy Sessions

A dedicated Behavior Technician (BT) will be joining your family to work directly with your child. They'll be implementing the treatment plan created under the guidance of our Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA).

To best support your child's current needs, we anticipate sessions will typically range from 15-20 hours per week. We understand that schedules can be busy, and we'll work with you to find a schedule that fits your family's routine.

Our BCBA will regularly supervise the sessions, usually 1-2 times per week. During these supervision sessions, the BCBA will provide feedback and model effective teaching strategies based on your child's treatment goals. As your child makes progress and masters certain skills, the BCBA will introduce new goals, ensuring continuous growth.

Parent Training Sessions

We'll work together to choose goals that you, as caregivers, can implement at home. Our BCBA will meet with your family regularly to offer support and monitor your progress with these goals. We're here to help you feel confident and successful.

During our Parent Training sessions, we'll keep you fully updated on your child's progress and celebrate their achievements. We also want to be a resource for you, so we can discuss referrals to additional supports that might benefit your child and family. We're committed to providing holistic support and working as a team.
